1. Describe your work: What area of fashion & design do you focus on?
I design and make African jewellery with a modern touch
2. What are you most inspired by and what is the core value/driving principle that leads your work?
I am mostly inspired by different African cultures and also modern fashion as I try to merge the two in my designs, I try playing around with colours and patterns to bring out the best of both worlds. Passion, quality and trustworthy are our core values that serve as a guide in every aspect of our operations
3. Has COVID-19 affected your practice as a designer and your approach to your brand?
I had to approach things very differently as a brand since the pandemic. Being in the online space so much, I had to be sensitive about what I post on social media. I reduced the frequency of announcing products to increase purchases but focused more on empowerment posts so that my brand does not seem insensitive to these unprecedented times.
4. Can you tell us about your supply chain and the materials you use?
I source my materials from Kariokor market and make the jewellery from my house. After it’s done, I make personal deliveries to clients or use alternative transport delivery services.
5. What does ‘Made in Kenya’ mean to you?
Made in Kenya means original, authentic and unique. It is a great representation of having great products in Kenya and people appreciating those products.
6. What shifts would you like to see take place in the global fashion industry over the next 5 years?
I would love to see more African designers on larger platforms like New York Fashion Week, London Fashion Week etc. I would love to see African fashion to not just be a trend but a lifestyle not only for Africans but globally, this will help African designers to even be able to shape trends.
